There they joined together to form The Ras’Muffin Soldiers (later becoming WASSMUFFIN SOUND), dedicated to keep the unity within their community, organising Sound-System Sessions, playing Reggae Music on a regular basis. Soon joined by Katan’ and Dicka, (as well as Mystikal’YelloFast’Ruben, Peewee, Major B who later left) WASSMUFFIN became d unexpected but well respected sound of the area, with his extended family of singjays, singers, chanters, mc’s and selectors, female and male alike, gathering crowds of West-Indians, Africans, French and local youth anytime they would play out in Montpellier and the region. Also running the Doubout’ Association and the popular Step-Up Time Radio Show (FM+Radio), WASSMUFFIN was at the right place at the right time, manifesting a constructive work that prove them as being the driving force behind the promising underground Reggae scene there, playing mainly Lokal (made in Martinique, Guadeloupe) and JA records. Their unity, their organisation and centralisation, their vibes and their sound generated lots of motivation and inspiration to many upfull and talented youth now on the edge of making it ‘big’ as artists.
At that time the vision was set for a WASSMUFFIN ACADEMY where each one would learn or teach, from and for each other through their cultural tool that is the Music, at first.
Also qualified as ‘The’ Raggamuffin sound of the south, the WASSMUFFIN SOUND took on opportunities to rise and open shows for the likes of Anthony B and the Star Trail Family, Buju Banton and the Til Shiloh band on their first European tour, as well as Metal Sound, Culture & Joseph Hill, The Mighty Diamonds.
Striving to stay active and upfront, and by keeping it militant they did some fruitful collaborations at the time, working at The Melomanes Club, The Lesotho, and with Exodus Sound, the late great Wadikal Joe, Tyrone Downie, Ras Tea.
By 2000, it became obvious that The WASSMUFFIN ACADEMY would open its wings, permanently setting foot on their 3 main fields (Martinique F.W.I. , Montpellier FRA. and London U.K.). This start manifested by the realisation of two co-productions: ‘Dancehall Hotta’ (compilation feat. some of the most upfull and talented local artists), and ‘Reggae Get Stronga’ ( presenting the work of top artists Luciano&JrReid).
At this time, Wassouri, also hailing from Martinique and residing in Bournemouth (Sth-West England) make his first step into the scene, joining and strengthening the movement in 2001.
Dj JC hailing from Dominica but also residing in Bournemouth became a part of the Wassmuffin family mixing by Wassouri’s side in 2005. Wassmuffin had many events over the years, Afro-Caribbean Faya, Mad Collab, Fresher than Fresh, The Reggae Affair and many collaborations with others, COCOZONE, Twice as Nice, Badbizezz and Tropical Jamz with Dancehall seduction where Wassmuffin DJs were residents for years then got the name of the best reggae dancehall crew in the area. DJ Sabz from Bournemouth who was introduced to the Academy in 2011 is officially a Wassmuffin Warrior and a great asset to the team. Our latest recruit Dj Pitza from Martinique but residing in Paris will bring more to the crew and help us expend the vibe even more.
Today, WASSMUFFIN ACADEMY hold a monthly residence in the Sth-West UK, running the best Sessions of the region, presenting talented artists with events managed by Wassouri.
Also working hard on our first commercial project coming out for Summer 2013, WASSMUFFIN is definitely one Sound that the world should count on for the uplifment of the masses as this future looks promising.
In addition to that, it is also important to keep up-to-date with the individuals as they always represent their Academy (Wassmuffin Academy) whenever they are out on a solitary mission: Dicka, Tonikal Warny,Wassouri, Katan and Stamina li are all working on their own artistic progression (skills & promotion) in order to strengthen WASSMUFFIN’s position.
